Concern is mounting over the levels of speed of traffic on one of the main approach roads to Tipperary Town.

Public representatives repeated their long-held concerns at a meeting of Tipperary, Cahir, Cashel Municipal District and informed officials.

The said that their that their safety concerns regarding the Bansha Road were becoming more profound given the increased levels of speed of traffic.

The matter was raised by Cllr Annemarie Ryan who asked officials if any progress had been made on the matter since it was last raised at a meeting.

“The situation is not getting any better. I have asked the gardaí to put a speed van there. It is a very serious issue. Even the other day on the Bansha Road somebody passed me out in the 50km speed zone,” said Cllr Ryan.

Cllr John Crosse also called for progress to be made and steps to be taken to introduce safety measures in the Bansha Road area.

“We need funding to help us get the speeding under control in that area,” said Cllr Crosse.

Cllr Tony Black said that he also supported the move to bring in speed control measures in the Bansha Road.

“I have also been passed out in the 50km zone on the Bansha Road. The situation down there has not improved. If anything can be done, it should be done,” insisted Cllr Black.

James Swords, Town Engineer said the council applied for funding to the Active Travel programme to cover Bansha Road and did not receive funding for it.

He informed members that the council asked Transport InfrastructureIreland for funding to design a programme of works in the area. At the moment a feasibility study was being carried out at the Bansha Road area and it was nearly finished.

“We have the feasibility study almost in place. That will be sent to the TII and hopefully we will get a design in place and then we will have to secure funding to have the works carried out. It is not going to happen overnight,” he said.

Cllr Michael Fitzgerald said the engineer had not given the members any great hope that something would be done.

“Is there any emergency work we could do in the Bansha Road  that would help the situation. It is getting worse, the cars are very close to the doors of the houses, can we do anything at all,” said Cllr Fitzgerald.

James Swords said he had suggested putting down temporary linings on the road but that TII did not agree with the proposal.

“We cannot alter the lining without getting their agreement on it,” said the town engineer.
