The Cathaoirleach of the Thurles Municipal District, Cllr Sean Ryan, has welcomed news that Tipperary County Council is to commence a survey of all public lights in the Thurles District next week.

The Council is participating in the National Public Lighting Energy Efficiency Project (PLEEP) which will see 11,600 lights upgraded to LED across Tipperary.

The contractor appointed to carry out this work (Killaree Lighting Services - KLS) has commenced surveying all existing streetlights.

Surveys in the Thurles Municipal District will commence on Tuesday, October 2.

Cllr Ryan confirmed that from the people can expect to see KLS crews inspecting streetlights in any part of the District.

All streetlights owned by the Council and TII will be inspected and its location, height, condition and light type will be recorded on the MapRoad system.

"Once surveys in an area are completed, a design team will select the best lights for each area and later in 2023 or early 2024 KLS will return to install the lights. Only older type sox and son lights will be upgraded in this project with a view to having all our streetlights 100% LED at the end of the project," he said.

Cllr Ryan also confirmed that there will be no traffic disruption in the area while works are taking place.
