Stroll in the Park for the boys in red

Athy had little difficulty in defeating Eadestown in the Preliminary Round of the Joe Mallon Motors SFC Preliminary Round at Cedral St Conleth's Park, Newbridge, this evening (Friday August 8).

And while it may have been a somewhat fortuitious goal from Ben Purcell, after eight minutes, that saw the full forward's point attempt dip viciously at the last minute over the head of Eadestown keeper Shane Sargent and into the net, there was certainly no fluke about the rest of the opening half as the boys in red led at the break 1-13 to 0-4 at the break, Eadestown lining out without Rian and Cian Boran, while Jack Sargent is travelling.

And while certainly did not blow the lights out in the second half they nevertheless were never in danger, in fact Eadestown's only second half score was a two-pointer free from Niall Cummins.

Athy ended with a healthy total of 1-20 but their second half display, albeit with the game well over at half-time, was not overly impressive.

Final score: Athy 1-20 Eadestown 0-6.

Scorers: Athy, Niall Kelly 0-7 (3 frees), Ben Purcell 1-2, Colm Moran 0-4, Ronan Kelly 0-2, Barry Kelly 0-2, Kevin Feely 0-1, Brian Maher 0-1, Michael Spillane 0-1.

Eadestown, Eoin Conneff 0-2 (2 frees), Niall Cummins 0-2 (2 point free), Charlie Carroll 0-1, Pauric Tuohy 0-1.
