Met Eireann has issued a hot weather warning for Co Kildare which comes into effect later today.

It is forecasting that temperatures will rise to as high as 28 degrees despite showers in the early morning.

The status Yellow Warning also applies to Dublin, Carlow, Wicklow and Meath.

It will come into effect from midday until 6.pm.

It is also the Summer Solstice, known as the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, where the sun will rise before 4am and set at 10pm.

In Newgrange, Co Meath, crowds have gathered inside the chambers to catch a glimpse of sunlight as it enters through the long tunnels, and many are also expected to watch the sunset later tonight.

Newgrange was built more than 5,000 years ago by stone age farmers and is one of Ireland's most popular tourist destinations.
