An Audi driver admitted speeding at 180 kph on the motorway in Laois.

Stefan Kovacs, 30, of 3 Grove Heights, Robertstown, Naas was accused of dangerous driving in relation to the incident on the M7 in Portlaoise on February 24 last.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant was doing 180kph in a 120 kph zone at 10am on the date in question.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client had the engine in his Audi A4 recondition shortly before the offence.

“He obviously for whatever reason drove at that speed,” she said.

She said the man, who is originally from Romania, has been living in Ireland for the last five years and works in demolition.

Judge Andrew Cody fined the man €300 and disqualified him for driving for two years.
