Delay queried in alleged Laois assault case

Man appeared before Portlaoise District Court
A man appeared in court accused of assault in Laois four years ago.
Austin Mvula (37) of 57 Stradbrook Apartments, Stradbally Road, Portlaoise is accused of assaulting a man at Esker Hills in Portlaoise on October 8, 2020.
Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick asked for disclosure in the case.
“The offence is alleged to have occurred in 2020 which is a considerable time ago,” she said.
When asked about the delay, Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said there could have been a number of reasons.
“I will have to make enquiries,” he told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court.
Judge Nicola Andrews said she would deal with the issue of delay on the next date. She adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on July 8, 2024.
