Blue-Green algae in Lough Neagh
The Lough Neagh Partnership has launched a much-anticipated consultation to develop a 10 Year Resilience Plan.
The public is invited to fill out an online questionnaire aiming to ‘preserve and protect the unique landscape’ by calling on people’s opinions.
Lough Neagh is the largest freshwater lough in the UK and Ireland and holds important ecological value for its plants and species but has been under threat due to the presence of Blue-Green Algae.
It supplies 40 percent of the North’s drinking water.
People will have until June 7 to fill out the 15-minute questionnaire and share their opinions on the lough.
“Lough Neagh is a mirror reflecting both beauty and challenges and together we can protect it, so we are inviting anyone with an interest in Lough Neagh to please take a moment to complete an online questionnaire and contribute to the sustainable stewardship of Lough Neagh,” said Michael Browne, Lough Neagh Partnership Heritage Plan Coordinator.
“We are actively seeking engagement from the public in completing this questionnaire as it is anticipated that the information garnered from the responses received online together with the insights gleaned at stakeholder meetings, will evaluate the heritage needs of Lough Neagh.”
Following the answers from the questionnaire, the Lough Neagh Partnership declared that they will be hosting webinars in the early summer.
The insights from the consultations will then be used to create the 10 year resilience plan, identify potential funding, and establish new sustainable structures.
After the writing of the first draft of the 10 year resilience plan, a new conference will be organised in the spring of 2025 to fully complete the project in November 2025.
The Lough Neagh Partnership received funding of £244,933 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
To complete the questionnaire by 7 June 2024, please visit loughneaghpartnership.org/the-lough-neagh-heritage-resilience-consultation/ or if you would like to receive a copy in the post, please email heritage.consultation@loughneaghpartnership.org
Details of the upcoming webinars will be promoted in advance online at loughneaghpartnership.org/the-lough-neagh-heritage-resilience-consultation/ and on Lough Neagh Partnership’s social media channels – Facebook, Linked and X.
