West Ulster Rail Initiative, based in Donegal, has welcomed progress towards a feasibility study for a rail link connecting Derry and Letterkenny.

Representatives of the rail lobby group met with the Minister of State for Transport, Sean Canney, at Leinster House Dublin recently to discuss the lack of rail connectivity.

Minister Canney, in response to the rail lobby case for rail investment, stated that he would engage with the NI Minister for Infrastructure, Liz Kimmins to explore joint funding for a full feasibility study including route study into rail connectivity between Derry and Letterkenny under the Shared Island initiative.

West Ulster Rail Initiative believes that this commitment marks a strong desire to build crossborder rail connectivity, and improvements in sustainable transport, building and expanding educational, economic, tourism and social opportunities for communities across the North West crossborder City region.
