Cllr Donal Coyle has asked the council to prioritise the upgrading of a bridge on the outskirts of Letterkenny

A Letterkenny councillor has called for funding to be allocated to upgrade a bridge outside the town.

Councillor Donal Coyle put forward the motion requesting that the council prioritise the upgrading of Carrygawley Bridge when the next round of funding is announced.

The bridge, located on the Lismonaghan to Listillion Road on the outskirts of Letterkenny, has been a concern for the Fianna Fáil councillor for the past number of years.

“I’ve been looking for something to be done about this bridge for over seven years,” Cllr Coyle said at the Letterkenny-Milford MD meeting. “There is a lot of disrepair, and I think it’s time something was done about it.”

Cllr Coyle said widening the bridge should be a priority of the Donegal County Council.

“It would be an awkward job because of the deep ravine,” he said, “but it’s possible to widen the bridge.”

Cllr Coyle highlighted this long-standing issue by telling the council about a local farmer in the area who has had to take his combine harvester around the bridge because it’s too narrow for a significant number of years.

“This is essential work that needs to be carried out,” Cllr Coyle said. “It’s about time it’s done now.”

Cllr Ciaran Brogan seconded the motion, saying: “I think there needs to be immediate action… It's very disappointing that it hasn't been taken by now.”
