A GAA stalwart who has been at the heart of his club for decades has been crowned the overall winner of the Connacht Tribune’s Pride of the Parish competition following a closely contested series of public polls.
Frank Walsh has been involved with Killannin GAA for more than 30 years. He currently serves as chairman, having previously held the roles of chairman, secretary and treasurer.
And at 70 years of age, he remains involved with Coiste Peile na nÓg and continues to help with a wide range of work around the club.
In association with Whelan's Garage/Husqvarna, Loughrea, clubs from across Galway were invited to nominate an unsung hero who makes an important contribution behind the scenes. As the overall winner, Frank Walsh will now receive a special prize package including multi-use vouchers and a getaway for two at a hotel in Ireland. A bespoke commemorative plaque will also be presented to recognise his contribution.
The response highlighted the remarkable amount of work carried out by volunteers throughout clubs across the county. It was fantastic to see so many clubs putting forward people who give up their time week after week, often without seeking any recognition for their contribution. Following the nomination process, the public had their say through a series of polls, with the competition proving extremely close.
The Connacht Tribune would like to thank every club that submitted a nomination and everyone who voted throughout the competition. Most importantly, Pride of the Parish has provided an opportunity to recognise just some of the many volunteers whose behind-the-scenes work plays such an important role in keeping clubs and communities across Galway going.
