Extended lifeguard hours for Mayo as heatwave continues

Beach and tidal pool patrols to operate until 8pm at popular swimming locations across the county until Thursday
Mayo County Council has announced extended lifeguard hours at several of the county’s busiest beaches and swimming locations as the current spell of hot weather continues.
Lifeguards will now be on duty from 12 noon until 8pm each day, with the extended hours remaining in place until Thursday, July 16.
The additional cover applies to several busy locations. On Achill Island, Keem Bay, Keel Beach and Silver Strand (Dugort) will all have extended lifeguard coverage.
In the Louisburgh/Westport, Carrowniskey Strand, Carrowmore Beach, Old Head Beach and Bertra Beach will benefit from the extended coverage.
Belmullet Tidal Pool, Killala’s Ross Strand and Mulranny beach, will also be watched by lifeguards until 8pm.
The decision comes as high temperatures are expected to draw increased numbers of swimmers and beachgoers to Mayo’s coastline.
Mayo County Council reminded the public to swim only at lifeguarded locations during patrol hours, follow the advice of lifeguards, and take extra care in and around the water during the warm weather.
Beach users are also encouraged to stay hydrated, use sun protection and be aware of changing sea conditions.
